Calf cramp at night? Ouch!
The painful calf cramp
Watch as Emily shares around how to prevent a painful calf cramp at night that can wake you up and cause pain and restless sleep.
Hey everyone, Emily from POGO Physio here today. I just wanted to take some time because I’ve had a few clients recently asking about cramps in their legs and what causes them. I just wanted to talk about a few of the theories that I’ve heard as to why people get cramps. You might get cramps through the day but a lot of people get them at night.
The main things I’ve heard are:
- Dehydration – if you are getting calf cramps at night so make sure you are drinking enough throughout the day.
- Electrolyte imbalance – some people get improvements in the calf cramps when they take magnesium powders. That’s something you can talk to your doctors or pharmacist about if that’s an option for you.
- Tight calves – when your lying in bed your feet are in a flexed position under the sheets so for that you can foam roll.
